Merry Christmas. And since it is Christmas week, we are
going to talk about the most popular and most loved Christmas tradition. Yup,
you guessed it right, it is the Santa Claus. Ho! Ho! Ho!
Santa, as all of us know, comes to visit us on the Christmas
Eve, climbing down the chimney with gifts for the kids who have been good
throughout the year and the ones who have been naughty get coal from him (I believed
this throughout my childhood and probably still carry a part of it in me today
as wellJ.)
Let us dive into the history to see how the tradition started and
evolved through time.

A Santa Figure |
Who was Santa Claus?
Santa, as we know him today, is significantly inspired by
Saint Nicholas, a Greek bishop from 4th century. He had a habit of
secretly gifting the things of use to the needy and this turned in to the gift
giving tradition of Santa. However, the appearance of Santa as white bearded man, wearing red fur was adopted
from the illustration for Santa in a 19th century poem “A visit from
St. Nicholas” by Thomas Nast.

Santa has a list of all the children in the world |
No Nerd notes this time, but some interesting traditions
from around the world.
1. If you live in Hungary, expect St. Nicholas to
visit you on the night of 5th December instead of 24th
Dec, which is the date when little Jesus will visit you with gifts
2. American and Canadian children traditionally
welcome Santa with a glass of Milk and cookies
3. Traditions do not forget the reindeer who run
all the way through the snow to bring Santa to us. Children in New Zealand, Britain,
US, Canada, Ireland & Australia keep carrot for the reindeer as well.
4. Santa is believed to live in his big home at
North Pole where he has a workshop to make all the gifts. Elves help Santa in
making these gifts.
WittyScribble wishes a merry Christmas to all the
readers. May Santa visit you with best of his gifts. Ho! Ho! Ho!
And as always,
Thanks for reading.
