Instruments that create music are magical themselves. Know about various types of string instruments

“How is your ‘Sarangi-Waadak’ friend?”, asked my dad in a casual conversation over dinner table. I was home during my semester break after completing engineering third year exams. He was referring to my buddy and roommate, Aditya Mishra, who was a guitarist by hobby and dad had met him a few times while seeing us off on train to college. He used to travel with his Givson six string guitar usually.

“He is doing great. He also got an offer from the same company as me.”, I said cheerfully. “And it is not a sarangi, Papa. It’s a guitar”, my tone changed and had a tinge of disappointment at my father’s ignorance and generalization of string instruments.

“Haha, they all look same to me.”, he laughed it off. In his defense, my dad is a nature lover who would enjoy the rustling sound of leaves and chirping of birds in a garden more over a Brayan Adams concert.  Also, Aditya’s instrument was always in bag and my dad assumed it to be a sarangi.

While Sarangi and Guitar both are string instruments, they are quite different from each other, both based on sound they produce and the method of playing them. Some of the string instruments are very popular and we might be able to identify and differentiate between them, but few are not. For example, you may find it easy to differentiate a guitar from a violin but is it equally easy to find a veena kept with few sitars?

Based on the structure or frame, string instruments can be classified into below categories:
Lutes: These are the instruments with a long neck that supports the strings on one end and the other end of the string is attached to a bout(the broader base of body).
Guitar is an example of lute

Harps: These instruments have strings contained within a frame, which is usually triangular. Remember the instrument that princess Chandrakanta used to play in the popular 90’s tv show ‘Chandrakanta’ on DoorDarshan, or for a more recent reference, the instrument that Dr. Sheldon Cooper’s girlfriend Dr. Amy Farah Fowler plays on the popular sitcom ‘The Big Bang Theory’.

Zithers: These instruments have mounted strings on a frame.

The string instruments can also be classified based on the method of playing. The common methods are:
Plucking:  Plucking the strings to create vibrations and create sound as in guitar, sitar or veena.

Bowing: Strings of the instrument vibrate when a bow with a ribbon of horse tail hair is moved across the strings as in violin or cello.

Striking: Strings are struck with a hammer on pressing a key as in piano.

Nerd Note 1: The pitch of the sound created by vibrating string can be altered by changing the length, tension or linear density of material of string.

Nerd Note 2: The body or bout is an important part that uses the acoustic effect of air columns to amplify and enhance the sound produced by vibrations.

Nerd Note 3: Some instruments have few extra strings which are not meant to be plucked. The purpose of these strings is to resonate with the vibrating strings and thus create additional tones. These strings are called Sympathetic strings.

Vaccines: Deciphering the magical potion

"I wonder why scientists are not able to create a vaccine for a virus which can be killed by a 10 rupees soap!", read one of the memes over the pandemic. The message made me laugh and feel sad at the same time. The last few months have been tragic, fearful, and chaotic…to say the least. The world has been in the grip of a virus, with lock-downs enforced in numerous countries. The cases are heading north with no respite in the near future. Vaccine has been a topic of discussion in recent times. Though theories on vaccines being in different stages of development are doing rounds, it is highly unlikely that one will be available for general use by the end of 2020. Though, I sincerely wish it does. But do you know how vaccines work? How do they create a protective shield around our body? And how did the name 'vaccine' come into existence? Continue reading. How was the name 'Vaccine' coined? Let us commence by reading about the word itself. 'Vaccine...

GO! GO! GO! H2O... Climb up the tree. 🌊 🍀

One of the daily chores assigned to me by wife is 'watering the plants'. Quite fond of plants, I have happily taken up the task and do it religiously, every morning. My mom too has a penchant for gardening. We even had a 'kitchen garden' at our home in Agra, boasting of vegetables such as Cauliflower, Spinach, Radish, Beans, Tomato. I along with my younger brothers, Kushagra & Mayank, were given the onus of watering our organically produced veggies & at times, scare away the monkeys from destroying or rather savouring our prized cultivation. Prized it was, as to every guest who came to our house, it was sort of mandatory to showcase them our vegetable garden. The green chutni made from home grown coriander really had a distinct flavour and aroma, much to our delight and guests envy 😋. Good old days. I'm getting nostalgic! Cutting back to the present day, on a pleasant and cool morning in Bangalore, I was watering the two beans climbers, which are clos...

Rain Rain, fall again - The Cloud Seeding poem

"Bengaluru witnesses the driest April since 1983". "Dubai floods in April 2024 take the lives of 4 people." I came across these headlines a few weeks back. Though contrasting and bewildering these sound, the anomalies, sadly, are the truth of the times. However, with rain finally coming in Bengaluru this month, the city again witnessed water deluge in several areas. It reminded me of the 2022 floods in the Indian Silicon valley. But yes, it brought much respite from the hot weather. Ironically, people prayed for rain to keep at bay during the much anticipated and climactic CSK v/s RCB match on 18th May. And the GODS didn’t disappoint the devout at all. The epic clash will be remembered for time to come, for the reasons known to one and all. The very next day, it rained cats and dogs; washing out our society cricket tournament (thankfully, we have a reserve day ahead!!). Never ever since my childhood, I had ever wished rain to stop, and with that fervour last Sunday....
