Up in the air and back on ground safely : Read to know more about history of parachutes.

I was on a short weekend trip to Bengaluru and got the much-awaited chance to catch up with Prakhar. We went back in time and were narrating all the funny stories of college days to our respective better halves. Meanwhile, a skydiving video played on the TV through youtube autoplay. The skydivers made several formations and held hands while falling freely under gravity. All of us had watched the video umpteen times earlier but it created same thrill every time. The divers continued to perform various stunts like somersaults and vaults like movement while falling before they ultimately opened a parachute which would eventually help them land safely on the ground. Thrilling and safe. Together.

Parachutes are one of the simplest yet effective inventions of modern era. Or should I say Renaissance since the oldest evidence of the design of parachutes date back to 15th century. Parachutes are mostly dome shaped and made of strong and light weight fabric, like nylon. The parachute creates a drag force and thus opposes the motion of free falling body through atmosphere.
In 15th century, Leonardo Da Vinci also contributed to the design on parachute. His design was bigger and used a wooden frame to keep the canopy shape of the parachute. The design was further enhanced by a Croatian inventor, Fausto Veranzio, who used a sail like cloth to provide better deceleration.
The designs evolved and in late 18th century, and a French inventor, Louis-Sébastien Lenormand invented the modern parachute in 1783. He is also attributed to come up with the term ‘parachute’ two years later, in 1785, by combining the Italian word ‘para’ meaning to defend or resist and French word ‘chute’ meaning fall. So, the word ‘parachute’ would translate to resisting the fall, describing its function. In the same year, 1785, another French inventor, Jean-Pierre Blanchard used parachute to demonstrate the safe evacuation from a hot air balloon. He used a dog as a passenger. Man’s best friends truly, dogs have been helpful even to the science.

Further enhancements to the design were focused to reduce the closed size of the parachute and to make it easy to carry. Parachutes found use in military actions as well during WWI when they were used as evacuating devices from the observation balloons. The designs and uses kept on enhancing with prime uses ranging from evacuating an airplane that has been hit to dropping the soldiers in to the enemy areas.

Nerd Note 1: Drogue chute is a parachute used to slow down the horizontal motion of a body like airplane.
Nerd Note 2: Various designs which control or enhance the horizontal motion of the parachutes are developed. This is achieved by altering the shape and size of the canopy thus controlling their motion through air. Few of these types are: Cruciform, Annular and pull-down apex, Rogallo wing, Ribbon and Ring, Ram-air. Tell us in comments if you know or want to know more about these types.

Science continues to amaze us and utilize the components of nature for the best of mankind. And its beauty lies in its simplicity.  WittyScribble continues to explore such amazing applications of science and takes pleasure to bring such information to you.
And as always,
Thanks for reading.
Ayush!!!

Vaccines: Deciphering the magical potion

"I wonder why scientists are not able to create a vaccine for a virus which can be killed by a 10 rupees soap!", read one of the memes over the pandemic. The message made me laugh and feel sad at the same time. The last few months have been tragic, fearful, and chaotic…to say the least. The world has been in the grip of a virus, with lock-downs enforced in numerous countries. The cases are heading north with no respite in the near future. Vaccine has been a topic of discussion in recent times. Though theories on vaccines being in different stages of development are doing rounds, it is highly unlikely that one will be available for general use by the end of 2020. Though, I sincerely wish it does. But do you know how vaccines work? How do they create a protective shield around our body? And how did the name 'vaccine' come into existence? Continue reading. How was the name 'Vaccine' coined? Let us commence by reading about the word itself. 'Vaccine...

GO! GO! GO! H2O... Climb up the tree. 🌊 🍀

One of the daily chores assigned to me by wife is 'watering the plants'. Quite fond of plants, I have happily taken up the task and do it religiously, every morning. My mom too has a penchant for gardening. We even had a 'kitchen garden' at our home in Agra, boasting of vegetables such as Cauliflower, Spinach, Radish, Beans, Tomato. I along with my younger brothers, Kushagra & Mayank, were given the onus of watering our organically produced veggies & at times, scare away the monkeys from destroying or rather savouring our prized cultivation. Prized it was, as to every guest who came to our house, it was sort of mandatory to showcase them our vegetable garden. The green chutni made from home grown coriander really had a distinct flavour and aroma, much to our delight and guests envy 😋. Good old days. I'm getting nostalgic! Cutting back to the present day, on a pleasant and cool morning in Bangalore, I was watering the two beans climbers, which are clos...

Rain Rain, fall again - The Cloud Seeding poem

"Bengaluru witnesses the driest April since 1983". "Dubai floods in April 2024 take the lives of 4 people." I came across these headlines a few weeks back. Though contrasting and bewildering these sound, the anomalies, sadly, are the truth of the times. However, with rain finally coming in Bengaluru this month, the city again witnessed water deluge in several areas. It reminded me of the 2022 floods in the Indian Silicon valley. But yes, it brought much respite from the hot weather. Ironically, people prayed for rain to keep at bay during the much anticipated and climactic CSK v/s RCB match on 18th May. And the GODS didn’t disappoint the devout at all. The epic clash will be remembered for time to come, for the reasons known to one and all. The very next day, it rained cats and dogs; washing out our society cricket tournament (thankfully, we have a reserve day ahead!!). Never ever since my childhood, I had ever wished rain to stop, and with that fervour last Sunday....
