How does a painkiller know where the pain is?

A human body is one of the most intricate designs on earth. The innumerable nerves, the super complicated brain, hundreds of muscles and so many other 'masterpieces' form a highly abstruse structure, the human body. Over time, we (read scientists/doctors) have dug deep and gained quite a lot of knowledge on the structure, but still many questions remain unanswered. With the advancements in science, people have got cure for hitherto fatal and life threatening diseases. History is abound with instances of epidemics where people were Quarantined ( Read about 'Quarantine' history here ) to control/limit the disease.  Today, we have a plethora of hospitals and emergency care units for our convenience. Surgical procedures for complex things along with small and innocuous looking tablets, bring one safely out of the danger zone. The compounds that go into making tablet/capsule/solution help fight microbes and restore the body to normalcy. There is one tablet that is us...

Up in the air and back on ground safely : Read to know more about history of parachutes.

I was on a short weekend trip to Bengaluru and got the much-awaited chance to catch up with Prakhar. We went back in time and were narrating all the funny stories of college days to our respective better halves. Meanwhile, a skydiving video played on the TV through youtube autoplay. The skydivers made several formations and held hands while falling freely under gravity. All of us had watched the video umpteen times earlier but it created same thrill every time. The divers continued to perform various stunts like somersaults and vaults like movement while falling before they ultimately opened a parachute which would eventually help them land safely on the ground. Thrilling and safe. Together. Man skydiving with packed parachute Parachutes are one of the simplest yet effective inventions of modern era. Or should I say Renaissance since the oldest evidence of the design of parachutes date back to 15 th century. Parachutes are mostly dome shaped and made of strong and light wei...

Meet an Ironman without Jarvis: All-in-one Swimmer, Cyclist and Marathoner

What do you think, can anyone survive if he falls in this roaring water?  asked Ayush.  I really don’t think so. People will even fear to walk over the kilometer long bridge over these waters. For normal humans, it is really impossible, but then world has enough people who belong to the League of Extraordinary , Pratyush replied. We were on a trip to Hampi and Tungabhadra Dam was the last point of our itinerary. Standing at the top of the dam, we couldn’t see the end of the reservoir water. The sight of the roaring waves, splashing and hitting the dam wall with full force, was really breath taking. Furious. Fearful. Not once did the river water not look like an ocean, probably owing the water to the good monsoon. The setting sun and the engulfing darkness added to the fear. But truly, there are people who dare to succeed and achieve unimaginable things that others tend not to think even in their dreams. One of these category of people are called Iron Man ! This title ha...

Whose way is it anyway? Know about zebra crossings, box junctions and lane markings

“Abe andha hai kya?”. These are the first words spoken in 90 percent of roads conflict in India (Yup, that’s a made-up piece of stats). Jadu(that is actually the nick name of one of my dearest friends), complying to the unwritten rule that every Indian follows on the road, shouted these words. He was riding, and I was pillion on his orange colored ‘Hero Glamour’, popular by the name ‘Santara’ (Hindi word for fruit orange) in our college. As we neared the signal, a young boy, around 12 years of age, started walking to cross the road. Jadu applied brakes just in time and avoided an accident. Well, the boy was clearly careless to jump on the road without checking the clearance on both sides. Thanks to Jadu’s skillful riding and attention to the presence of zebra crossing because of which he was riding his bike slow enough to react with in time and avoid the collision. Not a difficult guess, zebra crossing gets its name from the animal zebra because of the resemblance of the pa...

O Ri Chiraiya !!! How do birds migrate thousands of miles without getting lost?

'Just 500m more and we will reach our destination', said Mukul. 'No bro, I can walk no longer. Besides, we really can't see your company here. Are you sure you are checking the correct location on map?' , queried Vibhor.  Mukul, Vibhor and I were on a unintended walkathon in Whitefield, Bangalore . Fresh out of our MBA, Mukul and I were to join the IT MNC and hence thought of visiting it a day before. But we were taken-for-a-ride by the phone map as it misguided us when it showed the distance as just 2 kms. We soon realised that we were following some wrong location over the map.  Hence, at Ascendus  Park Square  mall near ITPL , we resorted to the conventional means of help. The Pan Vendor.  It is not incorrect when we say that the Pan vendors are the source for all sorts of information. The person didn’t only tell us the company location but also the nickname of that particular office, as was prevalent among the company people (I got to know it...

An animal, Mr. President and a hunting story: Know about the iconic 'Teddy Bear'

“Bro, I need some money. Give me 2000 bucks real quick.”. Announced Kushal (Name changed deliberately, you will know why in a while). “Bro we got our first salary about a week back and you are out of money already?”, I found it hard to believe. I and Kushal were from the same college and joined the same company along with 56 other people from our college. It was a closely knit group of our college that many people envied at our training campus. Kushal was not a miser but definitely not a profligate when it came to money. “Bro, this Wednesday is Teddy Day. You remember I told you about this cute girl in the other training batch. I must gift a teddy to her. A big one. A bro in need is a bro indeed. I’ll return your money as soon as I get the next salary. Pakka. I swear”. “Cut the crap and here’s your money”, the bro code demanded me to help Kushal and so did I. Cut to four years later, 2014, Kushal married Kanika(name changed again  😉 ). I visited their house and we laughed...

Bluetooth: A tale of a King and a Technology

" Bhai send me this song from your phone ", asked Priyam, while we were listening the soulful song from the newly released blockbuster Rang De Basanti. " Ok bro. Bluetooth open karo ", responded Shikhar while switching on the Bluetooth on his Nokia N-Gage phone. " But my phone supports Infrared only ☹️", Priyam said nervously. " What bro, Infrared is an old technology. Buy yourself a new phone na. Lucknow ke Yuvraj ho tum, but your phone doesn't live up to your stature ", winced Shikhar while pulling Priyam's leg. But he was right. Using Infrared to transfer data was really a thing of the past, even back in 2005, when this conversation happened. Before the likes of Gaana.com seeing the light of the day, we depended heavily on crowd-sourcing the songs. And Bluetooth provided us the platform to share songs and other data files easily with one another. Instead of keeping the phones in line-of-sight as was required for Infrared enable...
